What I learned in 2014

What I learned in 2013 can be found here.

I learned... Shit can be hard sometimes (and that might be okay).

I learned... I don't really know what I want to do "when I grow up", but no one does.

I learned... My friends are freaking awesome.

I learned... Getting a visa to live in a different country might be the hardest thing ever.

I learned... All years aren't going to be "The Best!" and that's okay too.

I learned... I love to paint, I really, really, love it.

I learned... Creating stuff to sell can be an  amazing and unique experience.

I learned... Creating stuff to sell might be the most vulnerable thing an artist can do.

I learned... Dance needs to be a party of my daily life. Nothing brings me such bliss.

I learned... My Career path doesn't have to look like the one I imagined in high school.

I learned... That one year later, I still miss The Netherlands. Not always, but often.

I learned... Road trips are one of the best ways to travel, and I need to do it more.

I learned... That Detroit is so cool.

I learned... Lip Stain > Lip Stick. (This is important!)

I learned... I get Hangry (hungry-angry) sometimes. Eating well is important... remember to do that!

I learned... Saying no to lots of things, so you can say yes to important things is critical

I learned... That there is no end point to this whole self discovery stuff. There is no "finding yourself" there is only the constant work of creating yourself, getting more comfortable in who you are as it evolves and changes. Changing your mind is okay, learning that what you once believed is no longer what you believe is okay. Finding comfort in the in-between, the unknown, the gray, is something you need to work on. Everything doesn't have to be figured out right now, or ever. And honestly, there will never be a time where that happens. You're not going to have it "all figured out" your just going to have to buckle up, and enjoy this ride.

Craft Fair Display (Work in Progress)

If you haven't heard, I will be selling at the Artisans Gift Fair on Saturday, December 13th from 12-6pm. Located at 292 Brunswick Ave, in Toronto (close to The ROM).

Want to see a sneak peak of my craft fair display? I was playing around with ideas tonight and I finally came up with something that I like! I'm still hoping to change it up a bit, get a table cloth etc, but here is the first peek and my shop!

I could not be more excited! I have worked so hard and had so much fun sewing, painting, making and prepping. I can't wait to see it all come to life in just 5 short days. Please come on out, say hello, and while your at it, buy something!

Thankful for my Car Breakdown!

I know it seems crazy, but as my car got toed away yesterday morning, all I really felt was gratitude. No, I was not thankful my car needed an expensive repair, but what came along with it was worth being thankful for.

It began with calling my Dad, he was patient and helpful, giving me advise and making sure I didn't let this issue overwhelm me. Then I called my sister, who's husband happily offered to come meet me, and take me to work - even though this would put him at least an hour late for his own job. (Thanks Matt!)

I was able to find a reasonable garage that could take my car that morning and it was only 2 kilometers from my house. I also had very pleasant CAA (road side assistance) staff helping me, and giving useful advice.

When the estimate came from the shop, although it was in no way cheap, I knew it could have been a lot more money. And  with a bit of savings built up, I know that I can afford this (despite it being the least fun way to spend money!).

I'm also very thankful that this issue wasn't the result of an accident, just an old part that needed replacing. When friends and family asked "What happened? Are you okay?", I was so very thankful my answer was, "I'm totally fine! Just need a part to be replaced".

So even though my car left on a toe truck yesterday morning.. I'm thankful. So so thankful!

My Art Nook!

I have had an art nook in my living room for about 1.5 months now, and I have to say - it is a game changer! It has been so fun to sit and just make things. It gives me a spot in the house I can feel comfortable leaving in a mess if I am mid-project, and it's also just a physical reminder that I should keep on making. I am so very thankful to have the space to have this little nook.
