Job Hunting Reflections: Water & The Environment

When you start a job hunt, you also really get to thinking about what it is you actually want out of a job, and why it is that you are looking in the field that you are. Besides the obvious "I studied in this field", there are so many more reasons I am interested in water and the environment.

I realized this early last week when I finally (after lots of searching) started coming upon companies that aligned with what I was looking for. Because I graduated just over a year ago, I was kind of forgetting what it was that I actually wanted out of a job. But I'm happy to say that I feel like I've re-discovered what it is I'm looking for!*

I've noticed I become very interested and curious about companies when they seem to have a genuine desire to better the environment. Often describing themselves as sustainability minded,  multi-disciplinary, interested in protecting biodiversity and maybe even having a focus on community. I know that is a lot to ask! But I love the idea that my work could be about more then just the work itself; it could be about the bettering of a community as a whole.

I understand that at the end of the day, it's just a water plant (or whatever it may be), but that water plant will provide much needed clean water to a community. I think keeping that in mind can make you feel better about your work at the end of the day. (Which I know may sound cheesy, but who wouldn't want to feel like their work is helping people!)

The reasons I decided to study engineering was because I love problem solving and I love trying to think of a creative solutions to complex problems. But what I love even more, is the idea of getting to do that with the end product being something that will somehow, even in some little way, leave a community, or the environment better of then it was before.... so with that oh-so-tiny goal, lets hope I find something!!

*This does not mean I will get this job right away, however, it's nice to know where I want to aim!

Looking for Engineering Work

As some of you readers may already know, I am currently looking for work in the Engineering field. Specifically, in the water, environmental, and hydrological engineering fields. I thought I should share what I am looking for here, because you never know how a company or employer may find out about you! If any of you fine readers happen to know any engineers (or are engineers!) in The Netherlands or Canada, I would love for you to have a look at my new Personal Website.

It has my CV, portfolio, and more information about me and what I am looking for in a job. So please head over to CarlyMFriesen.blogspot.com to take a look. If you happen to know anyone who is hiring, or even just have any suggestions, please pass along a link to my website, leave me a comment, or email me at CarlyFriesen1@gmail.com.

Thank you for your help!

Eating Well

Lately I've been having fun cooking. This is strange. very, very strange, as I generally hate cooking. But I'm actually quite happy for the shift, because it is a lot easier to care about what you are eating when you don't mind taking the time to prepare it.

I haven't been making anything fancy at all, but it is nice to just take a half an hour to put something even slightly healthy and refreshing together. And it may all be in my head, but I really do feel more energize when I take the time to make a fresh meal (instead of eating the more deep-fried/pre-made things I have a tendency to want to eat).

So because of this, my dinners have actually been quite enjoyable lately! I'm sure hoping this new found enjoyment of cooking sticks around! (But if not, there is always the classic peanut butter on toast!)

Goal Setting - Reflections

This year, I decided to try having "Monthly Goals" instead of having lots of new years resolutions. And although I love loooove this idea, I really need to find a way to have more accountability at the end of each month.

I have had some success as is, and I've definitely crossed things off my list that I wouldn't have if I didn't make it a monthly goal, but I think I'm averaging around 3/5 goals completed per month, and that just doesn't seem like enough!

I think I've realized the biggest issues, and it is embarrassingly simple... I write them, and then never look at them again. It is so obvious, why didn't I realize this sooner! My current solution is simple, but I think it will also be very useful. After I upload my monthly goals to the blog, I print a copy of the list and stick it on my mirror! That way, I am reminded daily of what I want to do each month! It's a small shift, but I think it will be helpful.

I'm also going to do something here on the blog. The last day of each month will now be a Monthly Goals check in to reflect on how many I did or did not achieve. I know this will help. I've said it before, but it is so true, this blog keeps me accountable for so many different things. And for that alone, I love it!

So get ready for July 31st to see how many of July's goals I achieve! :)

If these past 6 months have taught me anything...

it would be that I love nesting. I love it so much. Having a place of my own, that I can have to settle into, furnish with nick-nacks and pictures of friends, is something I crave.

it would be that the beer in Europe really is better.

it would be that I find routine very comforting.

it would be that the internet has changed everything. I don't feel nearly as removed from home as I thought I would.

it would be that I love learning new things.

it would be that you can miss home while similtaniously knowing that you wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

it would be that I really love making vlogs and artsy videos. It's an amazingly fun new passion.

it would be that sometimes I can be really brave.

it would be that and other times I am totally fine with hiding out within my comfort zone.

it would be that I will always be happy when there is dance music or "top 40" music playing at the bar.

it would be that I am very capable of taking care of myself, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't ask for help when I need it.

it would be that I love the Dutch Language.... I really really do.

it would be that I don't think 12 months will be enough....
