2013 Something Sunday 4: Yoga Mat Strap

I was travelling this week, and thus, didn't make anything new. But thankfully I found a few un-shared project from Christmas time!

I made this yoga mat strap for my dad (it looks slightly more manly without the purple mat haha). He does tons of yoga and so when I was thinking of what hand-made item I could make for him it was the first thing that came to mind!

It was surprisingly hard to make considering it looks pretty simple. But it was a fun challenge and I was happy with the outcome. The only thing I would do differently is to make a larger casing for the elastic so it could go on and off the mat easier.

That's all for this Sunday. I hope you have a great week!

2013 Something Sunday 3: Travel Jewelry Case!

This week is one of those weeks where I remembered why I challenged myself to post "something" every week. I haven't sewed very much over the last month, and I really have no reason why I haven't been. Having this here really encouraged me to get back to my sewing machine. (Side note: Sorry for the horrible photos it was dark outside by the time I finished making this!)

I have had my mom's xmas gift on my "to make" list since November, and considering its January, I'm pretty embarrassed I only finished it this week. I was so happy this week when I realized I had nothing new to share, and instead of feeling like a stress or a burden, it encouraged me to finally sit down and finish my mom's gift!

I made her a travel jewelry case just like the one I made for myself before I moved. It's been super helpful already, and my Mom enjoys being organized just as much as me, so I have a feeling it will be a hit! (It is currently in the mail, so I'm hoping that she doesn't read this before it arrives! Fingers crossed!)

2013 Something Sunday 2: New year, New Album

I loooved using Project Life as my scrapbooking method for the last year. It was a ton of fun, but it was also pretty dang expensive. This year, I decided to simplify even more, and just use a normal album and add some journalling to it. I picked up this album for $25, some paper for $10 and aside from a few splurges on stickers, I shouldn't need to buy anything more for the whole year! Check it out...

I made a bit of a title page with my pictures from the moving day. I was pretty excited about that Europe sticker too!

The goal is to have at least a page every two weeks (for when I'm just working and not travelling) and then have more pages for different adventures or mini-trips. I also hope to have one journalling card for every page because I have learned that my memory is just not that good, and having some details written down really helps bring the pictures to life!

As I travel and collect things that I think might be nice to add to my album (like ticket stubs etc), I will put them into the corresponding page. This way I don't lose them, and I don't forget to use them!

I haven't been here very long, so for now, the album is pretty empty. But I am hoping to print a few more pictures next week!

Hope you have a lovely week! :)

January Goals

As I mentioned in my recent post about New Years resolutions, I hope to make more monthly goals as a way to make them more tangible. 30 days seems way more doable than 365! What I hope to do, as a way to encourage myself to both set the goals and follow through with them, is post my new monthly goals on the first of each month! For January I waited a while because January 1st was already filled with goals and reflection, but now that I've had a little over a week to think about it, here are my goals for the rest of January!

The only "rule" I've given myself for this project is that I can't have more than 5 goals per month!

ps: Thanks to Elise Blaha for the inspiration for this type of goal setting as well as the blog post!

2013 Something Sunday 1: Apron

I decided to add 2013 to the Something Sunday title this year so that I can start counting up from 1 again. I like the idea of seeing what week in the year I'm in, and having that marker each week. So that's the plan for the titles moving forward.

Anyway, enough chatter, on to the project!

Last week I made an apron from an old pillowcase (shown above), as a Christmas gift for my sister! I loooved the fabric from the pillow case, and I realized the white trim would make a perfect waste-band, so I went for it.

After I had finished I realized the ties were super long, but I actually think it looks cute with the tie wrapping all the way around to the front. A nice little happy accident!

As I'm writing this, I'm not sure if it has arrived in the mail to her yet, but I hope she's happy with it! :)

2013: Some Goals and Whatevs

Happy 2013 Blog Readers!!

I am SO excited to announce that my sisters (who rule!) got me a blog re-design for Christmas! So sometime in the next month expect to see a majorly improved site :)

I'm thinking I'm going to do my resolutions a little different this year. I'm only going to let myself come up with 5 resolutions, but, I'm going to try and set more short term monthly goals! For me, this is a far less overwhelming way to plan and set goals. We'll see how it plays out over the next year...

So the 5 Resolutions I've come up with are:

1. Make a vlog on my youtube channel entirely in Dutch by the end of the year
(Side note: It doesn't have to be long, or fancy, but it has to be understandable to native speakers)

2. Travel to Sweden
(I've wanted to see Sweden for ages, and I'm so close now that I live in Holland (well, compared to Canada)! But I can feel myself getting nervous about how much it will cost, so I'm making it an official goal so that I MAKE this happen!)

3. Find ways to give back or volunteer this year
(I've made a choice to use my limit funds on travel this year. It's blatantly selfish, but it's what I've decided to do. SO in light of the fact that I wont really be donating any money this year, I want to find a few alternative ways to be a good global and local citizen!)

4. Keep up with "Wordless Wednesdays", "Carly's Thankful For" (my Friday post) and commit to doing  "Something Sunday" for every Sunday that I am not travelling.
(I've had tons of fun with my different series this year, and I want to keep them up! Especially the Thankfulness posts that I started later in the year. For Something Sunday I have to be reasonable though, as I know I'll be travelling a fair amount this year. So if I am away, I will give myself a break and skip that week!)

5. Read at least 15 books
(This is slightly less than the amount of books I read last year, but I have less access to a library so I'm trying to be reasonable! I'm getting the year started with "The Low Sky" by Han van der Horst)

What are your new years resolutions? Any monthly goal ideas?
I hope your 2013 starts out great!
